How Effective Are Automotive LED Headlights?

Automotive LED headlights demonstrated numerous advantages in testing, but some issues also arose in practical use. Compared to traditional halogen headlights, LED headlights offer significant advantages such as higher brightness, lower energy consumption, and longer lifespan. For example, after upgrading to LED headlights, the Haval H6 experienced a substantial increase in brightness, a 60% reduction in energy consumption, and a lifespan exceeding 50,000 hours.

Matrix LED headlights performed excellently in high beam control and turn signals, but some issues were also identified in actual testing, such as cut-off line height and glare. Furthermore, the relatively high cost of upgrading to LED headlights is one reason why some consumers hesitate.

In specific test cases, taking the Buick Envision and Suzuki Jimny as examples, these two models have different original lighting configurations, resulting in differences in the effects after upgrading to LED headlights.

After the upgrade, the Envision's low beam performance improved, but the high beam distance decreased; while the Jimny saw a significant improvement in high beam performance, and the glare issue was effectively resolved. This indicates that different car models have different original lighting configurations, resulting in varying effects after upgrading to LED headlights.

The Haval H6 review further demonstrates that the original lighting system suffers from insufficient brightness and short illumination distance. Upgrading to LED headlights significantly improves these issues. Not only is brightness greatly increased, but energy consumption is reduced and lifespan is extended. The review also introduces two technical approaches: no-headlight modification and lens upgrade with headlights on, providing car owners with diverse options.

From real-world driving scenario feedback, upgrading to LED headlights provides drivers with better visibility in urban commuting, highway conditions, and extreme weather. However, issues such as cut-off height and glare during the upgrade process, as well as the relatively high price, require consumers to consider these factors when making their choice.
